Shutdown Planner

Plan a maintenance shutdown’s task sequence, parallel tracks and total cost.

General inputs

Shutdown tasks

Track = a parallel workflow. Tasks on the same track run sequentially; tasks on different tracks can run at the same time with different crews.
TaskDuration, hTrackCrew, people

Result: shutdown plan

0 h
Recommended shutdown duration
0 €
Total labor cost

Production downtime cost
0 €
Total shutdown cost
⚠️ The model assumes tasks on the same track run strictly in sequence and different tracks run fully in parallel. In reality, dependencies between tasks (e.g. you can’t test before reassembly) may require refining the schedule.

How the calculation works

The planner contains 8 editable shutdown tasks (lockout, cleaning, dismantling, inspection, repair, reassembly, idle test, start-up and handover). Each task has a duration in hours, a track (1–3, representing parallel crews) and a team size. The critical path is the longest track total; labour cost = duration × team × hourly rate; downtime cost = critical path × downtime cost per hour.

Example: with all 8 tasks on one track, the shutdown lasts 36 hours. Moving one 4-hour task to a second track shortens it to 32 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is the critical path?

The longest sequential chain of tasks, which determines the total length of the shutdown.

How can I shorten a shutdown?

Split tasks onto parallel tracks, prepare materials and spare parts in advance, and lock out the machine early.

Does the calculation include contingencies?

No, it is a baseline plan. Add a time buffer according to the age of the machine and the risk of the work.
