Takt Time & Capacity Calculator

Calculate your line’s required takt time and compare it against your actual cycle time and capacity.

Result: takt time and capacity

0 s
Takt time (required)
0 s
Current cycle time
0
Current capacity, units/day
0
Shortfall/surplus, units/day
⚠️ The model assumes steady demand and cycle time throughout the working day and does not account for seasonality, setup times, or scrap from quality issues.

How the calculation works

Net working time per day = (shift length − breaks) × number of shifts. Takt time = net working time ÷ daily demand; capacity = net working time ÷ cycle time; gap = capacity − demand. If the cycle time is shorter than or equal to the takt time, capacity is sufficient. Otherwise the tool shows by what percentage the cycle time must be reduced.

Example: a 480-minute shift, 30 min breaks, 1 shift, demand of 500 units a day and a cycle time of 60 s give a takt time of 54 s, capacity of 450 units and a shortfall of 50 units – the cycle time must be cut by 10%.

Frequently asked questions

What is takt time?

The time in which one product must be completed to meet customer demand.

What if capacity is not enough?

Shorten the cycle time, add a shift or a parallel machine. See also the bottleneck calculator.

Does the calculation include downtime?

No, the result is theoretical capacity. To assess actual efficiency, use the OEE calculator.
