Changeover Loss Calculator

Calculate the annual value of reducing your changeover time toward a SMED target.

Current changeover time

A typical SMED target is under 10 minutes, but set a realistic interim target

Production value

Result: changeover loss calculation

0 €
Potential annual savings if you reach the target duration
0 min
Time saved per changeover
0 h
Hours saved per year
0 €
Current total annual loss
⚠️ The calculation assumes the target duration is actually achievable (e.g. by applying the SMED methodology) and that the time saved is used for additional production, not left as idle time.

How the calculation works

The calculation is based on SMED logic: minutes saved = current − target time; annual hours saved = minutes ÷ 60 × changeovers per week × weeks per year; annual value = hours × loss per hour. You also see the current and target loss per year.

Example: 10 changeovers a week, 45 min now, 20 min target, EUR 300/h and 48 weeks give 25 min saved per changeover, 200 h a year and a saving of EUR 60,000; the current loss is EUR 108,000 a year.

Frequently asked questions

What is SMED?

A method for shortening changeover time by separating the work that can be done while the machine is running.

How much time is realistic to save?

It depends on the machine and process. Set a target time your team can assess.

How can I speed up changeovers?

Standardise the work, prepare tools in advance and use quick-release fixings.
